BC Math Pathways: Foundations vs Pre-calculus vs Workplace
Understanding British Columbia's secondary math pathways — Foundations of Mathematics, Pre-calculus and Workplace Mathematics — and how to choose for Grades 11 and 12.

Quick answer
In British Columbia, Grade 10 students take Foundations of Mathematics and Pre-calculus 10 (or Workplace Mathematics 10), then choose a pathway in Grade 11. Pre-calculus 11 and 12 lead to Calculus 12 and most science and engineering programs; Foundations of Mathematics suits arts and many social science programs; Workplace Mathematics suits trades. Check post-secondary requirements first.
Key takeaways
- Grade 10: Foundations of Mathematics and Pre-calculus 10, or Workplace Mathematics 10.
- Pre-calculus 11–12 is the usual route to science, engineering and business programs.
- Calculus 12 is optional but helpful for STEM-bound students.
- Switching pathways later is possible but can need extra courses.
The BC secondary math structure
| Grade | Main options |
|---|---|
| Grade 10 | Foundations of Mathematics and Pre-calculus 10; Workplace Mathematics 10 |
| Grade 11 | Pre-calculus 11; Foundations of Mathematics 11; Workplace Mathematics 11 |
| Grade 12 | Pre-calculus 12; Foundations of Mathematics 12; Calculus 12; Statistics 12 and other options |
Students in BC also complete the provincial Graduation Numeracy Assessment, usually in Grade 10.
Pre-calculus pathway
Pre-calculus focuses on algebra, functions, trigonometry, and exponential and logarithmic relationships. Pre-calculus 12 is a common requirement for science, engineering, computer science, commerce and some health programs. Calculus 12 builds on it and gives a head start for first-year university calculus.
Foundations pathway
Foundations of Mathematics 11 and 12 emphasise reasoning, statistics, financial maths, logic and modelling. It suits students heading into many arts, humanities and social science programs, or who want practical, applied maths.
Workplace pathway
Workplace Mathematics focuses on measurement, finance and practical problem-solving, and suits many trades and apprenticeship routes.
How to choose
- 1Check post-secondary requirements. Look at the programs your teen is considering at BC universities and colleges. Many STEM and business programs require Pre-calculus 12.
- 2Be realistic about Grade 10 performance, particularly algebra in Foundations of Mathematics and Pre-calculus 10.
- 3Keep options open where possible. It's usually easier to move from Pre-calculus to Foundations than the other way.
Where students find it hard
- Pre-calculus 11: quadratics, radicals and rational expressions, and trigonometry.
- Pre-calculus 12: transformations, logarithms, trigonometric identities and equations, and combinatorics.
- Foundations 11–12: set notation, logical reasoning and statistics interpretation.
A quick self-check for Pre-calculus 11
If your teen can do most of these confidently at the end of Grade 10, Pre-calculus 11 is a realistic choice:
- Factor x² − 5x − 14 and solve x² − 5x − 14 = 0.
- Simplify a radical such as √72.
- Find the slope and equation of a line through two points.
- Use the exponent laws with negative exponents.
- Solve a right triangle using sine, cosine or tangent.
If several are shaky, that doesn't rule out Pre-calculus — but it's a sign to get support early in Grade 11 rather than waiting for the first test.
Timing and course planning
Some students take Pre-calculus 12 and Calculus 12 in the same year; others take Calculus 12 in their final semester. Talk to the school counsellor about timetabling early, especially if your teen also wants to fit in sciences such as Physics 12, which pairs well with Pre-calculus.
How tutoring helps
For Pre-calculus, tutoring that strengthens algebra and function skills early in Grade 11 prevents problems in Grade 12. For Foundations, it helps students apply concepts to unfamiliar, wordy problems.

Frequently asked questions
Is Pre-calculus 12 required for university in BC?
For many science, engineering, business and computer science programs, yes. Arts programs often accept Foundations of Mathematics. Check each program's requirements.
Should my teen take Calculus 12?
It's optional, but very useful for students heading into STEM programs, as it prepares them for first-year university calculus.
Can you switch from Foundations to Pre-calculus?
It's possible, but it may require taking an extra course such as Pre-calculus 11. Talk to the school counsellor early.
