VCE Maths Explained: General, Methods or Specialist?
A guide to choosing VCE maths subjects in Victoria: Foundation, General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics, and who each suits.

Quick answer
VCE offers Foundation Mathematics, General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics. Methods is the main calculus course and a common prerequisite for science, engineering and commerce degrees; Specialist is the most advanced and is taken alongside Methods. General suits students who want practical, applied maths. Check university prerequisites before choosing.
Key takeaways
- Mathematical Methods is the key prerequisite for many university courses.
- Specialist Mathematics is normally studied together with Methods.
- General Mathematics is applied and data-focused, not a 'lesser' subject.
- Strong Year 10 algebra (including 10A content) is the best preparation for Methods.
The four VCE maths subjects
| Subject | Focus | Typical student |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation Mathematics | Everyday and workplace maths | Students who need practical numeracy |
| General Mathematics | Data analysis, finance, networks, matrices, recursion | Students heading for business, health or general degrees |
| Mathematical Methods | Functions, algebra, calculus, probability | Students aiming for science, engineering, commerce or maths |
| Specialist Mathematics | Advanced functions, complex numbers, vectors, further calculus, proof | Strong students, studied alongside Methods |
Each subject runs over Units 1–2 (usually Year 11) and Units 3–4 (usually Year 12).
Methods: the most important choice
Mathematical Methods Units 3–4 is a prerequisite for many university courses in science, engineering, IT, economics and commerce. If your child is unsure about their future path, Methods keeps more doors open — but only if their algebra is secure enough to cope.
Methods assessment includes a technology-free exam and a technology-active exam, so students need to manipulate algebra by hand as well as use a CAS calculator efficiently.
Specialist: for strong, motivated students
Specialist Mathematics extends Methods with topics such as complex numbers, vectors, further calculus and logic and proof. It's normally taken together with Methods, and it's a heavy workload. It suits students who enjoy maths and are considering engineering, physics, mathematics or similar courses.
General: applied and valuable
General Mathematics is not "easy maths". It focuses on statistics, financial maths, matrices and networks, which many students find more relevant to their plans. Some students take General alongside Methods.
How to decide
- 1Check prerequisites for the university courses your child is interested in, using the VTAC guide and university websites.
- 2Look honestly at Year 10 results, especially algebra. Students who studied 10A or optional advanced content usually find the step into Methods easier.
- 3Talk to the school's maths teachers, who see your child's work every week.
Where students struggle
- Function transformations and inverse functions
- Exponential and logarithmic equations
- Differentiation and integration in applied problems
- Probability distributions
- Writing clear working on the technology-free exam
How tutoring helps
For Methods and Specialist, tutoring is most effective when it strengthens algebra and gives regular practice on technology-free questions. For General, practising multi-part applied problems and calculator efficiency helps most.

Frequently asked questions
Can you do Specialist Maths without Methods?
Specialist Mathematics is designed to be studied alongside Mathematical Methods, and schools almost always require both together.
Is General Maths enough for university?
For many courses, yes, but some — especially in science, engineering and commerce — require Mathematical Methods. Check each course's prerequisites.
Do VCE maths subjects scale well?
Scaling changes year to year and shouldn't be the main reason to choose a subject. Choose based on ability, interest and university prerequisites.
